What personal data is collected and why

When you visit this website, certain statistical information will be stored for administrative and technical reasons. The provider of the pages automatically collects and stores information in so-called server log files, which your browser automatically transmits to us as soon as you enter our website. These are:

  • browser type and browser version
  • used operating system
  • host name of the accessing computer
  • time of the server request
  • IP address (anonymization by removing the last 2 octets before saving)
  • usage data

A merge of this data with other data sources will not be made.

This data is processed for the following purposes:

  • ensuring comfortable use of this website
  • evaluation of system security and stability

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, the data shown in the comments form is collected as well as the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. The user’s e-mail address will not be published. If you want your previously submitted comment to be removed, you can ask me to do so.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Contact forms

When submitting messages to this website using the contact form, the provided data about the sender’s name, e-mail address, IP address and user agent will be collected and stored locally. This data is used to process your request as well as to detect spam content. The data will be kept confidential. A transfer to third parties does not take place. This does not include any data obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes, e.g. harassment, hate speech, etc.

Webmentions & Syndication Links

This website embeds Webmentions via Bridgy. More info: https://www.w3.org/TR/webmention/ and https://indieweb.org/Bridgy
It embeds and publishes comments and reactions to original content that was initially published on this website and subsequently cross-posted (“Syndication Links“) as public post on either of the following services: Twitter, Flickr, Instagram, Facebook.

Webmentions are an explicit feature of your content management system: by sending a webmention to the webmention endpoint of this website, you request the server to take notice of that referral and process it. As long as public content is concerned (i.e. you are not sending a private webmention), such use of this website’s webmention endpoint implies that you are aware of it being published.

You can at any time request the removal of one or all webmentions originating from your website.

Syndication Links, which are links to the same content on other sites, may be displayed on comments, but only if supplied by the submitter or if a comment was generated by webmention, if they appear on this site.
Meaning: If, for example, a user clicks “Like” on a specific post on my connected Instagram/Flickr/Facebook/Twitter account which links back to its original source on this website, this reaction will appear as a webmention on this website, along with the user’s profile picture they provide on their respective account. The user’s name will not be published.

I will remove any of this on request.

Cookies

When you visit this website, information in the form of cookies may be stored on your device. Cookies are small files that are transferred from an internet server to your device, and then get stored on its hard drive. Only the IP address is stored here – not personal data. The information stored in the cookies allows to automatically recognize you the next time you visit this website, which will facilitate your use. As a rule, cookies will make your browsing experience better. However, you may prefer to disable cookies on this site and on others.

If you do not want your computer to be recognized the next time you visit, you may decline the usage of cookies by changing the settings in your browser to “decline cookies”. The procedure can be found in the operating instructions of your respective browser. You can also take a look at the About Cookies website which offers guidance for all modern browsers. However, if you decline the use of cookies, there may be limitations in the use of some areas on this website.

If you leave a comment on this website or the contact form, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

Embedded content from other websites

This website imports photos from my flickr gallery through flickr.com’s API in order to display certain photographic content on this website. Read more about flickr’s privacy policy here.

This website embeds videos stored on www.youtube.com which are directly playable from this website. This third-party embedded content behaves just as if the visitor were watching the video directly on Youtube. Cookies are transmitted as well as user behavior recorded. What data that is and what happens with it can be found in Google’s privacy policy.

When you’re logged in to Google, your data will be assigned directly to your account. YouTube stores your data as usage profiles and uses them for purposes of advertising, market research and / or custom design of its website. You have a right to object to the creation of these user profiles, and you must be directed to YouTube to use them.

If you do not want your data tracked by youtube.com or google.com, please log out of your Google Account or Youtube account, delete the cookies in your browser and visit this website again.

Analytics

This website stores some user agent data using the security plug-ins WP Statistics (https://wp-statistics.com/privacy-and-policy/gdpr-compliance/) and Wordfence (https://www.wordfence.com/blog/2018/05/wordfence-and-gdpr-how-the-defiant-team-are-preparing-for-gdpr/).

WP Statistics anonymizes IP addresses by hashing them.

These data are used to prevent spam comments in the discussion, to detect brute-force attacks, malicious login attempts, and to track users’ whereabouts around this website in compliance with the European General Data Protection Regulation.

The data collected on the website is stored locally in this website’s WordPress directory. No data will be shared with third parties.

How long the data is retained

If a user leaves a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

If you do not want your previously submitted comment to be public anymore, please delete it.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left any comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data  held about you, including any data you have provided. You can also request to erase any personal data held about you.

This does not include any data obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes, e.g. harassment, hate speech, etc.
