documenting zu // nov 2017

November 15, 2017 · Juliane Schütz

Wihooo! I’m escaping the impending winter tristesse for a couple of days to embark on a project I’ve always wanted to realize: Documenting a band on tour, in a tiny van, trying to capture the full blown emotions and happenings onstage and offstage, with all the highs and lows and crappy gas station food they might encounter.

It is a) an honor for me and b) by far not coincidental that I get to do this project with Zu, the Italian monsters of progressive jazzcore or whatever you might want to name it. It is also safe to say that without this band I would not be where I am today, which comprises a ridiculous amount of various aspects. I met them first in December 2014 when my then-new band Vesuv was lucky enough to open their show hosted by Musikverein @ K4. It was not only the music that struck me immediately, but also the people behind it. So consequently, I started to dig deeper on many different levels; discovering, exploring and eventually connecting loose ends I wasn’t even aware of in the first place.

Retrospectively (and highly metaphorically as well), it felt like being thrown into deep water without warning and without knowing how to reach the shore because there wasn’t any clear direction, then trying to swim against the waves just to keep your head above the water — and then eventually  giving in and floating with the current to see where it would take you.

Long story short, this time it takes me to Italy! 🙂 Hope to see some of you on the road!!
